Insight Timer is without a doubt the best free meditation app available at the moment. There are thousands of guided meditations on there that you can play and enjoy ad-free.

The great thing is that you can learn and gain experience from over 2,000 teachers and pick the voices and sounds you like, in order to make meditation enjoyable for you.

Although, it has to be said, that it isn’t particularly quick and easy to discover the best meditation for your needs.

There is simply too much choice. If for example, you search for “sleep” in the “Meditation” tab, you’ll find tens of guided meditations. Now, you can whittle these down by the amount of time you want to spend and the type of voice you like, which is useful.

However, you will still be left with a lot of choice. And I think most of us don’t want to spend our time searching and looking for the things we really want. We just want to be pointed at the best available option.

That’s why I have written this guide. I have spent over 150 days on Insight Timer and tried tens of guided meditations. I want share from my experience, the ones that I believe are best.

These recommendations will ultimately save you time trawling through the app and help you discover some real gems.

Quick Confidence by Andrew Johnson

Description – Andrew Johnson has a great sounding voice and his speed of delivery has a welcoming hypnotising effect.

In this meditation he covers the great benefits you can gain from meditating that will motivate you to build the habit.

I think it’s a great beginner’s meditation as there isn’t any emphasis on the way you’re positioned or the way you should breathe.

Description – I’m sure there are many good sleep meditations on Insight Timer. I, personally, have only used this one.

Meditations to help you sleep are “body scan meditations”, a type of mindfulness meditation typically taught on MBSR courses. They guide you to relax the muscles in your body, which puts you in a relaxed or sleepy state.

I have to say that this one definitely works. I’ve never actually reached the end!

The meditation begins with the intention of instilling this belief. It has you observe the sounds around you and puts you in a relaxed state. You are then invited to observe your thoughts for 5-10 minutes. Don’t panic! The voice does return and checks in on you. It finishes with calming sounds before ending with a peaceful chant.

This meditation is really fantastic. It’s my personal favourite.I have been using this every day in the morning for months now.

David Gandelman has a refreshing take on meditation; it should be fun and it should be enjoyable. I certainly agree with this!

The meditation has you break down whatever you are taking too seriously in your life right now. It introduces a positive reframe and best of all easy humour.

As I write this, I just used the meditation after noticing I was stuck over-analysing an interview I just had. It helped break the pattern of engaging in those thoughts and allowed me to go about the rest of my day doing what I really want.

It’s short and effective at building the feeling of loving kindness towards all types of people.
